Pompano's Newest Mornings Start on North Federal Highway

When GRUB was announced in early October, it was billed as a diner serving breakfast, brunch and dinner from 7 a.m. to 9 p.m. Today the hours on its own website read 7 a.m. to 3 p.m., seven days a week, and the meals it lists are breakfast, brunch and lunch.

That change in hours says something about this fall's openings in east Pompano Beach. The new places on North Federal Highway are organized around the morning: a diner that opens at 7, a bar that serves breakfast before it switches to tapas, and a Cuban bakery that has posted its sign but no opening date. Out on East Atlantic Boulevard, the evening concepts are still listed as coming soon.

GRUB is a 7 a.m. diner now

GRUB is at 14 N. Federal Highway. Owner George Abbondante described the menu to the Sun Sentinel as "real-deal comfort food with Southern soul." The Sun Sentinel also reported that the place is an upscale spinoff of his Hen and the Hog brunch restaurants. Kinsler Josaime, a Miami native, runs the kitchen, according to Pompano Beach Insider.

The pre-opening coverage highlighted a Brown Butter Cast Iron Pancake, French toast made on house-baked Japanese cinnamon milk bread, chicken and waffles, shrimp and grits, in-house smoked meats, a coffee and tea bar, and milkshakes. Some of the dinner dishes the Sun Sentinel described, like the bacon-onion fondue burger and country-fried steak, now land in a day that ends at 3 p.m. GRUB's website lists burgers, meatloaf, country-fried steak, pulled pork, a fish sandwich and key lime pie alongside the breakfast burritos and biscuits. It also lists reservations, online ordering for pickup and delivery, and catering.

For anyone planning a visit, the 3 p.m. close is the number to remember. The 9 p.m. hours printed in the October preview no longer apply.

Prescott's overlaps GRUB at midday and runs into the evening

About a dozen blocks north, at 1308 N. Federal Highway, Prescott's sits where US 1 meets the 14th Street Causeway. According to Pompano Beach Insider's August profile, it runs on the motto "breakfast early, tapas late." The breakfast menu includes the Big Breakfast, avocado toast, a lox bagel and three-egg omelets. At noon the kitchen switches to small plates like ceviche, coconut shrimp, mini smash burgers, French onion soup and fish and chips.

Its listed hours make "early" a relative term. Prescott's opens at 11 a.m. Monday through Wednesday and at 10 a.m. Thursday through Sunday. It closes at 9 p.m. most nights and at 10 p.m. on Fridays and Saturdays. If the kitchen switches to tapas at noon, the breakfast window is about an hour or two, depending on the day.

GRUB covers 7 a.m. to 3 p.m., and Prescott's opens at 10 or 11 a.m. and stays open into the evening, so the two overlap from late morning to midafternoon. Its other draw is an all-day happy hour, which the Insider contrasted with bars that make you wait until four o'clock. Prescott's also books live music several nights a week, hosts trivia and comedy nights, and has added a Sunday brunch with singer Violet Jeffries. There's parking on site. The Insider describes it as being on the way home from the pier for most of east Pompano.

Vicky Bakery would fill the coffee-and-pastry gap

The next opening on this stretch is likely to be a bakery. Vicky Bakery, the Cuban chain Antonio and Gelasia Cao founded in 1972, lists a location at 1154 N. Federal Highway as "Baking Soon." Pompano Beach Insider reported that the address also appears in state business filings. The chain has about 25 Florida locations. The closest ones to Pompano Beach are in Fort Lauderdale, Plantation and Hollywood.

The menu covers the Cuban counter staples: guava-and-cheese pastelitos, croquetas, empanadas, cakes and Cuban coffee, plus sandwiches. The site is on the east side of North Federal Highway, north of Atlantic Boulevard. Pompano Beach Insider tied it to the same stretch that welcomed GRUB in October. No opening date has been announced, and Vicky Bakery's locations page still shows the Pompano Beach store as "Baking Soon."

The North Federal morning lineup, as of early November

Spot Address What it serves Hours or status
GRUB 14 N. Federal Hwy. Breakfast, brunch, lunch 7 a.m. to 3 p.m. daily
Vicky Bakery 1154 N. Federal Hwy. Cuban pastries, coffee, sandwiches "Baking Soon," no date set
Prescott's 1308 N. Federal Hwy. Breakfast, then tapas from noon 11 a.m. Mon to Wed, 10 a.m. Thu to Sun

East Atlantic's evening openings are still on the way

The other new restaurants in east Pompano are mostly dinner concepts, and none of them is open yet.

Pho Bar Vietnamese Kitchen is building out at 2515 E. Atlantic Blvd. in the Pompano Beach Shopping Center, just east of Federal Highway. The menu will include pho, noodle bowls, rice plates, curries, small plates, coffee and cocktails. Pompano Beach Insider reported on Oct. 11 that no opening date had been announced. PompanoBeach.News reported the same day that an earlier late-summer target had already passed.

Farther east, RimLay Seafood is taking over 3428 E. Atlantic Blvd. for Thai-influenced, New Orleans-style seafood boils. Owners Laddawan "Tammy" Boonlong and Dusadee "Mr. Big" Boonlong are targeting late November or December 2026.

Atlantic Boulevard also lost a long-running morning stop this year. The 7-Eleven at 403 E. Atlantic Blvd. closed in April 2026 after 32 years, and the 2,836-square-foot building went on the market for $1.35 million in May. As of mid-October, Pompano Beach Insider reported no new tenant or buyer.

Put together, a morning on North Federal is something you can plan today, and an evening at the new East Atlantic restaurants still depends on opening dates nobody has set. For more on downtown's after-dark scene, see the story of the shared backyard behind Old Town's new restaurants.

Saturday, Nov. 7: breakfast inland, drones at the beach

The City of Pompano Beach's free Drone Show Extravaganza returns Saturday, Nov. 7, for its fifth year. Firefly Drone Shows will fly 500 drones over the water just south of Fisher Family Pier, with support from Fishing Village businesses. The event runs from 5:30 to 9 p.m. at 222 N. Pompano Beach Blvd., and the show starts at 7 p.m.

Plan the afternoon around the evening logistics:

  • Viewing: Watch from the beach south of the pier. The pier closes for the event, and the north side is reserved for drone staging.
  • Parking: The Pier Garage charges $20, cash only. Other lots and metered street spaces are $4 an hour.
  • Shuttles: Free shuttles leave from the Pompano Beach Aquatic Center, 820 NE 18th Ave. The last shuttle to the beach leaves at 6 p.m., and the last return trip departs at 10 p.m.
  • Rideshare: Pickup and drop-off is at the Beach Branch Library, 3250 NE 2nd St.
  • Road closures: Riverside Drive closes starting at 2 p.m. North Pompano Beach Boulevard and eastbound Atlantic Boulevard at Harbor Drive can close as early as 6 p.m.

The city's press release also mentions Pompano Community Park at 1660 NE 10th St. The event page lists the Aquatic Center as the shuttle pickup, so check the city's page before you leave home. With eastbound Atlantic closing in the evening, a 7 a.m. breakfast at GRUB and an afternoon at Prescott's both end well before the beach-side roads start shutting down. Our earlier post on how the pier's parking now runs through Old Town covers the beach-parking changes behind this season's shuttle plan.

I've lived in Pompano Beach since 2000, and I keep track of which openings are actually serving and which are still "coming soon," from the strip between Atlantic Boulevard and the 14th Street Causeway to the corners like 403 E. Atlantic that are waiting for their next tenant. If you'd like to talk through what's changing near your street, or what these openings mean for a home on the east side, Lisa Stephenson would be glad to hear from you. Let's Connect.
